Journalists and close friends Despoina Sotiropoulou and Rena Kouvelioti share the conflict that emerged in their relationship after the latter was diagnosed with early memory loss.

This experience, documented by the two lifelong friends through moments of rare intensity and profound sensitivity, is titled “The Trauma Between Us”. It is one of the ten selected entries competing in the podcast section of the 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, which runs until March 16, 2025.

The podcast will be hosted on the LiFO platform after the conclusion of the 27th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.

It is a deeply personal narration about the enduring strength of their friendship, impulsive denial, the birth of aggression, and a painful conflict. The illness, which is increasingly present in modern society, is also explored and analyzed by psychiatrist and psychotherapist Dimitris Papadimitriadis.

Memory weakness, the first symptoms, traumatic periods, and the supremacy of love—when it manages to break free from habits and emotional attachments—are among the emotions confessed by the two friends as they stare the beast directly in the eyes.

This is the audio documentation of a painful journey for two strong women who were not broken by the pain of loss, but by the anticipation of an inevitable death. And their greatest victory? They experienced their separation as if it had already happened. The transformation of trauma into miracle is what turns this music-enriched documentary into a guide capable of shaking even the strongest beliefs about emotional defenses—those that ultimately serve no purpose except maintaining the deceptive illusion of stability.

Both women speak about a soul with an unknown memory. About souls that knew they would meet long before entering this life. And they agree—philosophically and existentially.

Despoina emphasizes her fear of the pain caused by loss, as a woman who was unexpectedly confronted with devastating losses in both family and love. Rena speaks about her ego, which protects her from life’s inevitable hardships. Yet they both agree on one thing:

“The defenses we spend years building around ourselves, believing they will protect us from pain and life’s fractures, are nothing more than the garbage of the soul that we carry with us. They are what we are obliged to cast away.”

And that is where they meet—at the fragile point from which they continue forward once again. With whatever remains. A place where upliftment becomes the goal, again and again.

A brain that suddenly went blank for a few seconds—as if the hard drive containing Rena’s memories had crashed—became the trigger for the temporary trauma between them. A trauma that frightened them like a beast, and which they confronted like a monster. They looked it directly in the eyes and experienced their separation before it fully arrived. And somehow, they reached this conclusion:

“It is the souls that become real from being immaterial. It is love that activates them, shaping them into existence. And without a doubt, it is love—this mighty force—that transforms trauma into miracles.”
